Oct. 12th, 2006 11:47 amOrson Scott Card's soon-to-be released book "Empire" looks pretty damn prophetic to me. Given his views on homosexuality, I doubted I'd ever agree with him politically, but there it is...
And why the hell don't copy protection companies get sued or prosecuted for doing shit like this? Since when does playing a DVD disc on your PC *not* fall under well-established Fair Use laws? My PC is my only media machine, and I'd sooner break a DVD into tiny pieces and shove it forcibly up my own ass than accept that I'm "not permitted" to play it however I damn well please after paying my hard-earned money for it. This shit is getting fucking ridiculous, and all it does is make online piracy via BitTorrent and the like look more and more attractive, because of the LACK OF DRM in a pirated copy - the price is completely notwithstanding, just like with HDMI and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. (Also, rather than just complain ineffectually, I'm sending this link to the EFF, as a loyal member thereof.)

Update:
If you want your fair use rights to be protected, which as an informed consumer you absolutely should, please take a minute to send the following letter to your representative. (Or customize it if you like.) Just be careful not to check the box about receiving email from the EFF unless you actually do want it.
