So, thanks to
pfriedma, and to a lesser extent
ex_nihilo, I'm now turning into a real Linux convert. This old-ass Pentium 266MMX laptop has risen anew from the ashes of Windows 98, and if I didn't know better I'd almost think it was a Pentium II. (Still old, but the performance increases are just amazing to me.)
I'm learning slowly - I managed to get my wireless card set up myself using ndiswrapper, and also figured out how to install java and even my antiquated Chips & Technologies graphics driver, all of which were initially problems. However, upgrading to a custom kernel proved to be a task that kicked my ass last night.
Possibly more chronicles to follow.
